Expenses for damaged personal belongings (such as clothing, glasses, or a phone you were carrying when the criminal offense occurred)

Compensation is provided for lost or damaged clothing and other usual personal belongings, as well as small amounts of cash that you carried when the personal injury/criminal offense occurred.

Personal belongings may include, for example, a mobile phone, wallet/purse, and jewelry.

The rule is found in section 1 of the State Compensation to Victims of Crime Act.

Regarding property damage:

Property damage refers to, for example, damage to your car and home, including the contents of the home.

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Board can only provide compensation for property damage if the wrongdoer falls under the following categories:

  • Is forcibly placed in an institution under the correctional system,
  • Is arrested with the intention of being imprisoned or is held in pretrial detention,
  • Has been transferred to an institution outside the correctional system under section 49(2) of the Penal Code,
  • Is admitted to a residential institution for children and young people under the Social Services Act,
  • Due to mental retardation, is admitted to long-term residential facilities for individuals with significant physical or mental disabilities, pursuant to section 92 of the Social Services Act,
  • Is involuntarily committed or detained in the hospitals mentioned in section 1 of the Act on the Hospitalization of Mentally Ill Persons.
