Transition payment

The surviving spouse or partner (cohabitant) may be entitled to a transition payment, which is currently 173,000 DKK (2020 level). The transition payment is intended to compensate for various expenses typically associated with the death of a spouse or partner. This can include, for example, moving costs.

If you are not the surviving spouse or partner of the deceased, the transition payment can only be granted if there are special circumstances. For example, this might apply if you have lived together with the deceased for many years and shared a household.

Please note that compensation for reasonable funeral expenses is also included in the transition payment, so compensation for funeral expenses cannot be granted at the same time as the transition payment.

The rule is found in section 14a of the Liability and Compensation Act.
