Can I buy real property in Denmark?

If you want to purchase a villa, building plot, condominium, summer house, cooperative housing, or other real property in Denmark, special rules apply. These rules apply regardless of how you intend to use the property.

The general rule is that if you do not have domicile in Denmark according to the Acquisition of Property Act, or if you have not had residence in Denmark for at least 5 years, you must obtain permission from the Department of Civil Affairs to acquire real property in Denmark.

This means that you do not need permission from the Department of Civil Affairs if you:

  • have domicile in Denmark according to the Acquisition of Property Act, or
  • have had residence in Denmark for at least 5 years.
